Week 1 Speech Self-Introduction Speech
Deliver a short presentation (1 to 2 minutes)
in which you introduce yourself to a group of people. Think for a short bit
about what you might share with either an audience of your peers or people you
might be meeting for the first time in a professional situation. Then take a
look at the recording presentations guidelines to ensure that you have
everything, and begin recording when you are ready. It may take you some time
to get all of the logistics (e.g., adequate light, ensuring that the sound
level is audible, and framing yourself), so plan to capture at least several
test runs before the final recording. Though you may wish to include them, no
outline or audience members are required for this presentation. This assignment
will be revisited and revised in Week 7.
Week 1 Assignment
Communication Anxiety Report and Analysis
Fill out the Personal Report of
Communication Anxiety, and complete the following questions:
What does your report seem to suggest about
your level of communication apprehension?
What
effect do common causes of communication apprehension noted in the reading
(e.g., heredity, learned apprehension, skill deficit, etc.) have on this?
What are some ways found in this week's
readings and this week's discussion about managing apprehension that may help
alleviate challenges or prove useful?
For each question, you should write at
least 100 to 200 words in response, using correct grammar, spelling, and
syntax. Please submit a copy of your report and your responses in a separate
Word (.docx) file to the Dropbox. Save your files with the following naming
conventions: John Gibbons SPCH 275 Week 1 PRCA and Josh Gibbons SPCH 275 Week 1

Week 2 Assignment
Impromptu Speaking and Self-Evaluation
Part I: Present and record a 1- to 2-minute
impromptu presentation on a topic of your choice. Though you should choose
something that allows you to be clear, the topic may be relatively free
flowing. It may help to start with a single question. Here are sample questions
that may be used to get you started with ideas: How would you spend lottery
winnings? What charity or cause would you support? If you were able to travel
to a time or place in history, where would you go? What is one challenge you
have faced? What is your favorite book, video game, television show, or song?
Where would you like to take a vacation? What is a current event that interests
you? Whom do you admire? What was your most embarrassing moment? Part II:
Listen and view your presentation, and write a short critique of your work. Use
the following prompts to frame your critique: Write two paragraphs about what
did or did not surprise you about watching the video of your presentation. Feel
free to discuss the differences or similarities between your perceptions
immediately after the presentation and those after watching the video. Identify
both two strengths and two areas of opportunity in your public speaking skills.
Submit Part II as a Word (.docx) file to the Dropbox. Save your file with the
following naming convention: James Schneider SPCH 275 Week 2 Assignment.

Week 7 speech
Presentation Revised Self-Introduction
Speech
Begin by reviewing your work over the
session in the various speaking opportunities you have had in this course,
putting particular focus on your Self-Introduction that you presented in Week
1. Then think about a professional context, such as a job fair, a work dinner,
an industry conference, or a job interview—any professionally based situation
in which you may need to introduce yourself to someone who does not know you.
Consider the following:
Who
are you professionally?
How
will you explain that in a short amount of time?
What's a good response when someone
prompts, "Tell me about yourself?"
As you consider these questions, begin to
gather and rehearse ideas for an elevator pitch that introduces you to someone
new. Notes or an outline are recommended but not required to be submitted. You
should have an audience present for this presentation, even if the audience is
not professionally connected to or well known by you. The audience-centered
focus for what you say should be someone unknown. This presentation should
combine all of your improvement, your professional communication, and your
communicative identity into a tight elevator pitch that you may use and revise
for years to come.
Week 7 Assignment Speech Criticism
Assignment
Use
the template provided, in addition to the handout about the Canons of Rhetoric,
from Doc Sharing to write a critique of a
presentation selected by your professor. Save your file with the following
naming convention: Tara Mills SPCH275 Week 7 Speech Criticism PLEASE READ THIS
FIRST PAGE CAREFULLY. IT SHOULD BE DELETED WHEN YOU SUBMIT YOUR ASSIGNMENT FOR
GRADING.
General Rationale
This
document contains the instructions for the Speech Criticism Assignment. It is
designed as an opportunity for you to observe and critique a presentation in a
formal manner using the canons of rhetoric as a framework.
Instructions 1.
Carefully listen to and view the assigned
presentation for this assignment. Review your professor’s announcements for the
specific presentation(s) for this assignment.
2. Write an introductory section that gains
the audience’s attention, gives a sense of your overall impression of the presentation,
and sets up the rest of your critique.
3. Write a section about the invention
canon of rhetoric as related to this presentation.
4. Write a section about the arrangement
canon of rhetoric as related to this presentation.
5.
Write a section about the style canon of rhetoric as related to this
presentation.
6.
Write a section about the delivery canon of rhetoric as related to this
presentation.
7. Write a concluding section that
summarizes the major critiques of the presentation and ends comfortably.
Additional Expectations and Suggestions
This
should be three or four double-spaced pages. Use headings to identify clearly
which canon through which you are evaluating. The four middle sections should
be relatively equally developed. Use the Questions for Canons of Rhetoric
document in Doc Sharing to generate ideas for content. You are not required to
answer every question or prompt in that document. Aim to write this in third
person, and use examples to support your ideas. Write in complete sentences,
and use transitions to connect the sections into one coherent critique
document. Check carefully to ensure that your spelling, grammar, syntax, and
overall writing style are professional or college level. This should not show sloppy
writing. The remainder of this document gives some general formatting that you
may use. Delete this first page before submitting it to the dropbox. Save your
